Ray's Top Shelf

In my efforts to get an internship over the Christmas holiday (I'll go crazy if I don't have a job/project/something/anything to do while I am on break), I've applied for several internships.  One of which is for my favorite blog, Into the Gloss.  I know I have mentioned it a few times on this site, and they aren't even hiring right now…but it can't hurt to put myself out there, right?  Anyway, I made a mock post for them, to get to know me and my beauty habits.  Take a look if you please.

12.04.13 / THE TOP SHELF

I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, FL.  I come from a big family, being the youngest of four children.  My oldest sister was a Mary Kay rep while I was in middle school and that’s how I was introduced to makeup.  I was always grabbing the satin hands kit (that stuff is amazing!) and whatever cranberry eye shadow I could find.

I met my now husband on the first day of high school.  I had a huge crush on him, but he was too cool for me.  Maybe it was my cranberry eyeshadow that deterred him…

As the years went on, I graduated from high school and Mary Kay makeup and found a new love with MAC.  I remember the first time I used their eye shadows.  I bought a shimmery white and coppery brown.  I they lasted me for years and I used them till they were completely gone.  When I could afford it, I would buy their foundation, too.  I loved it.  It wasn’t too cakey, and matched my skin perfectly.  I’m thinking about going back to it when the bottle of Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer runs out.  I also really got into their colored shadows in my early twenties.  I remember matching the colors to my outfits, naturally.  I would wear this olive green shimmer over the shimmery white and coppery brown.  I started lining the inside of my eyes with this cheapo eyeliner that stuck like glue.  I loved it.  That was my go-to going out look.  That, paired with my boot cut jeans, skimpy top, and BCBGirls heels—wowza.  I thought I was the cat’s meow.  Around that time, my now husband wanted to date me…this time I was too cool for him…must have been those inner lined eyes.

When I was about 23, I found this copper shadow from Too Faced, that I still have today and it has to be my favorite.  It makes my green eyes pop!  Around that time my best friend got to root through a Chanel makeup rep’s entire collection.  It was like a dream come true.  She got so much stuff and shared all of it with me.  She is a wonderful friend!  It was like a lifetime supply of everything Chanel.  The rep was apparently getting out of the makeup biz, and wanted to rid herself of it.  Lucky for me, I got the best blush ever (Rose Petal), that I still use to this day.  It’s just the perfect amount of peach meets pink.  I went out one night, in my go to outfit of a pencil skirt, black top, and chunky heels, complete with inner lined eyes and perfect blush and bumped into my now husband.  This time, the stars were aligned and we started dating for real this time…must have been the perfect blush I was wearing (or maybe the too tight pencil skirt).

We got engaged this past April here in NYC.  We were visiting so I could take a tour of Parsons, The New School for Design to see if I wanted to attend.  The second I walked into the school, I knew I wanted to go there.  It was a huge trip!  Since school started in August, and we knew we wanted to get married in FL, we made it a quick engagement, planning the wedding for that July.  I had brown hair at the time, and wanted it to be white blonde for the big day.  5 highlighting jobs later, I got what I asked for.  I had the perfect up-do, and my best friend did my makeup.  We got married at the courthouse.  Then, had a party at my mom’s.  It was the perfect day.

Highlighting my hair that much left it super damaged.  I’m still trying to repair it.  After dying it brown and cutting it into a chin length bob, my hairdresser told me I am not allowed to do any heat styling (gasp!).  I’ve been using Bumble and Bumble for the truly damaged hair shampoo and conditioner, and their Grooming Creme as well.

We moved here a month after our wedding and since then, my skin has changed so much.  I switched to washing my face with Dove bar soap, and it made a huge difference in my skin.  The water here is completely different than FL…much better actually.  I use Neutrogena’s oil free moisturizer and that seems to work pretty well.

I pretty much have stuck to the same makeup routine but going with a less is more approach.  I use Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and undercover pot.  For my current eye makeup, I use NARS Biarritz shadow and line my eyes with MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot.  I just started using an eyelash curler, and boy does that make a huge difference!  It’s a part of my daily routine now.  I also fill in my brows with an Almay brow pencil.  I have really splotchy brows.  If I’m feeling really fancy, I’ll get my brows waxed and tinted.  Makes a huge difference.  I’m thinking of seeing the brow specialist at Ten Over Ten one of these days.

I try so hard to get into lipstick, and I will occasionally wear MAC’s Ruby Woo, or Snob (my favorite), but I mostly stick with the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Isola Bella.

For perfume, I am totally obsessed with See by Chloe.  It’s the perfect light, sweet scent.  I’m currently milking every last drop out of the sample I have!  Hey, I am a student!
